Caperdonich Connoisseurs Choice 1998

Caperdonich grundades av James Grant 1897 i Rothes. Destilleriet skulle vara ett ”extradestilleri" till Glen Grant och byggdes sålunda alldeles intill. Det döptes också till Glen Grant II och ingick under samma licens. Nedgång för whiskyboomen i början på 1900-talet gjorde dock att Glen Grant såg sig tvungna att stänga destilleriet. Det dröjde till 1965 innan destilleriet startades upp igen och då under nytt namn, Caperdonich Distillery. Enligt lag fick inte två whiskysorter ha samma namn och man valde då namnet på en lokal vattenkälla Caperdonich Well. Två år efter återuppstarten utökades produktionen med två nya pannor till totalt fyra pannor. Nästan all whisky producerat på destilleriet hamnar i Chivas Brothers blendedsorter. Inga officiella single malt buteljeringar har släppts från destilleriet men oberoende buteljerare såsom Gordon & MacPhail har släppt några äldre utgåvor.

Vattnet kommer från källan med samma namn som destilleriet, Caperdonich Well. Kornet köps lätt rökt från centrala mälterier. Mäskkaret är i gjutjärn. De åtta jäskaren är i stål. Två mäskpannor och två spritpannor som samtliga är i lanternmodell. Pannorna är uppvärmda internt med ångrör. Råspriten lagras på flertalet olika fat. Det finns inga lagerbyggnader på destilleriområdet.

Denna utgåva är destillerad i september 1998 och buteljerad i augusti 2011 till en alkoholhalt på 46%.

Men nu tycker jag att vi går vidare till recensionen:

Utseende: Ljus bärnsten -1,5

Doft: Mellandjup doft av mörka russin, torkad frukt och lite doft av örter. Lite lätt söt citrus åt citronhållet samt vanilj.

Med vatten: Mer nektar och mer floral doft med lite pomerans i slutet.

Smak: Mjuk, söt och elegant med smak av vanilj, blomhonung och lite örtig.

Med vatten: Lite mer stickig på tungan och en djupare örtkrydda i smaken. Eken slår igenom mer redan i grundsmaken.

Eftersmak: Söt nektar med lite eksmak som sitter i en stund med en viss strävhet i gommen efter. 

Med vatten: Samma som ovan men mer av allt speciellt strävheten och dessutom en lite mer värmande känsla.

Omdömme: En bra standard whisky med bra balans mellan smakerna. Definitivt inte spretig utan följsam och fin. Något att reta smaklökarna med eller efter en lättare maträtt med inte för kraftiga smaker eller till dessert. Kommenderas om ni kan komma över den.

Caperdonich founded by James Grant in 1897 in Rothes. The distillery would be an "extra distillery 'Glen Grant and built so close by., It was renamed also to Glen Grant II and was included under the same license. Decline of Whisky boom in the early 1900s meant that Glen Grant were forced to close the distillery. it took until 1965 before the distillery was started up again, and then under the new name, Caperdonich Distillery. According to Law did not get two whiskys have the same name and was chosen as the name of a local water source Caperdonich Well. two years after the relaunch expanded production with two new furnaces to total of four boilers. Nearly all the Whisky produced at the distillery ends up in Chivas Brothers blended varieties. No official single malt bottlings have been released from the distillery but independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail has released some older releases.

The water comes from the source with the same name as the distillery, Caperdonich Well. The grain is purchased lightly smoked from central maltsters. The mash tub is cast iron. The eight washbacks is in steel. Two mash stills and two liquor stills which are all in the lantern model. The boilers are heated internally with steam pipes. Raw sprite is stored in several different barrel. There are no warehouses at the distillery site.

But now I think we move on to the review:

Appearance: Light amber -1.5

Nose: Medium Deep aromas of dark raisins, dried fruit and a little scent of herbs. Some light sweet citrus (lemon?) and vanilla.
With water: more nectar and more floral scent with a bit of bitter orange in the end.

Taste: Soft, sweet and elegant with flavors of vanilla, floral honey and a little spicy.
With water: A little more prickly on the tongue and deeper herbs. The oak will emerge more already in the base flavor.

Finish: Sweet nectar with a bit of oak flavor that sits in for a while with a certain roughness on the palate after.
With water: same as above but more of everything, especially the roughness and also a bit more warming sensation.

Comments: A good standard Whisky with good balance between the flavors. Definitely not sprawling but smooth and nice. Something to tease your taste buds with or after a light dish with not to strong flavors or a dessert. Recommended if you can get your hands on it.
