Recension:


Doft: Citrus, honung, ek, en subtil doft av gräs eller örter, gröna frukter,
Med vatten: Mycket ljungblom, mindre citrus, krossade färska örter, sötare fruktdoft som av fallfrukt.


Smak: Söta päron, gräddkola, honung, maltig citrus (söt citron), örter,
Med vatten: Ren honung till att börja med sedan mycket päron och en lätt krydda på tungspetsen. 


Finish: Söt apelsinkola, lätt krydda kommer fram efter någon sekund, en väldigt lätt rökig känsla mot slutet samt mandel och malt.
Med vatten: mer krydda, lite torrare i karaktären och här kommer citrusen tillbaka. även päron blandas in i smakerna men är ganska svår att urskilja. Det gäller även mandelsmaken. Däremot förstärks den rökiga smaken och håller mycket längre.


Kommentar: En bra whisky som håller en bra kvalitet men inte bjuder på så stora överraskningar men som håller i de flesta sociala sammanhang eftersom det finns delar i den som kan tilltala de flesta. Passar bra till kaffet efter maten istället för en likör.

Review:

Nose: Citrus, honey, oak, and a subtle scent of grass and herbs, green fruits, 
With water: heather flower, less citrus, crushed fresh herbs, sweet fruit scent like that of windfalls.

Palate: Sweet pear, toffee, honey, malty citrus (sweet lemon), herbs, 
With water: pure honey to start then a lot pear and a light spice on the tip of the tongue.

Finish: Sweet orange caramel, light spice comes forward after a few seconds, a very light smoky feeling towards the end as well as the almond and malt. 
With water: more spice, a little drier in character, and here's citrus back. also pears are mixed into the flavors but is rather difficult to identify. This also applies to the almond flavor. However are strengthened the smoky taste and last much longer.

Comment: A good whisky that holds a good quality but do not offer so many surprises, but that fits in most social situations because there are parts in that which might appeal to most people. Goes well with coffee after dinner instead of a liqueur.

Glen Garioch Founders Reserve

Glen Garioch Distillery som idag är Skottlands östligaste destilleri grundades av Thomas Simpson 1797. Dokumentation finns i lokal dagspress om ett destilleri på samma plats redan 1785 men 1797 har blivit det officiella året för grundandet. Destilleriet ligger mellan Banff och Aberdeen i staden Old Meldrum. Byggnaderna är i grå granit och liknar mer en gammal skola än ett modernt destilleri. Namnet Garioch kommer från den vackra dalen med samma namn där de hävdar att det bästa kornet i Skottland växer. Destilleriet ägdes och drevs av några olika ägare under 1800-talet som inte genomförde några större ändringar. 1908 köptes destilleriet av det nybildade företaget Glen Garioch Distillery Company som under en tid producerade maltwhisky till blendedwhiskyn VAT69. 1968 upphörde destilleringen då ägarna ansåg att det var brist på vatten. Endast två år vilade destilleriet innan Stanley P. Morrison köpte det. Omedelbara åtgärder av Morrison var att borra fram en ny vattentäkt samt utökning av pannor från två till tre. Glen Garioch stängdes under åren 1995 till 1997 men är nu renoverat och i full drift.

Glen Garioch tar sitt vatten från källorna på Percock Hill. Fram till början på 80-talet mältade de sitt eget korn och whiskyn hade då också en något kraftigare karaktär. Nu tar man sitt korn (optic) näst intill orökt från Inverness. De har ett mäskkar som tar fyra ton och sju jäskar som tar 21.000 liter vardera. Samtliga i rostfritt stål. Destilleriet har tre kopparpannor, en mäskpanna och två spritpannor. Pannorna är traditionellt lökformade och uppvärmda med interna ångrör med långa smala halsar. Spriten lagras framför allt i begagnade bourbonfat. Faten lagras i ägarnas stora anläggning i Glasgow. Destilleriet producerar närmare två miljoner liter årligen varav större delen går vidare till olika blandfirmor.

Recension:

Doft: Spritig, lätt rök, ljunghonung, sherry (ganska subtilt), ek, lätt vanilj i bakgrunden,gröna äpplen, lätt citrus, kola,

Med vatten: kraftig doft av gröna äpplen, ljung och vanilin, blommig, frisk och behaglig. Spritigheten försvann.

Smak: Mycket alkohol som snabbt går över, söt, honung, lätt krydda, lite stäv och besk direkt men inte på ett obehagligt vis. 

Med vatten: Mandel, honung, vanilj, den kraftiga alkoholsmaken försvann

Eftersmak: Krydda, harts, oljig, blommig för att sedan gå över i subtila smaker av vanilj, citrus och vild apel.

Med vatten: Samma som utan vatten förutom små noter av sötmandel.

Kommentar: Helt ok. Var lite negativ till en början men den växer. Viktigt att den får andas lite och lugna ner sig minst i en kvart om flaskan är nyöppnad. Bra både med och utan vatten men vatten lyfter fram en annan karaktär. Blanda ca 2 teskedar till 3 cl.

Glen Garioch Distillery which is now Scotland's most easterly distillerywas founded by Thomas Simpson 1797. Documentation is available in local newspapers on a distillery at the same place already in 1785but 1797 has become the official year of the foundation. The distilleryis located between Banff and Aberdeen in the town of Old Meldrum.The buildings are of gray granite and is more like an old school than a modern distillery. Garioch name comes from the beautiful valley of the same name in which they claim that the best barley in Scotland is growing. The distillery was owned and operated by several differentowners during the 1800s that did not implement any major changes.1908 the distillery was bought by the newly formed Glen GariochDistillery Company, which for a time produced malt for the blend whisky VAT69. 1968 stopped the distillation when the owners felt it was a lack of water. Only two years the distillery was resting beforeStanley P. Morrison bought it. Immediate action by Morrison was to drill a new water source and the expansion of the boilers from two to three.  Glen Garioch closed during the years 1995 to 1997 but is nowrestored and fully operational.

Glen Garioch takes its water from springs on Percock Hill. Until the early 1980 they malted their own barley and the whisky had also a more powerful character. Now they take their grain (optics) almostunpeated from Inverness. They have a mash tun, which takes fourtons and seven washbacks that takes 21,000 liters each. All in stainless steel. The distillery has three copper stills, one mash stilland two spirit stills. The stills are a traditional onion-shaped and heated with internal steam pipe and have long slim necks. The spiritsis stored mainly in used bourbon. Casks are stored in the owners'large facility in Glasgow. The distillery produces nearly two millionliters annually most of which go on to different blending firms.

Review :

Nose: Spirituous, light smoke, heather honey, sherry (quite subtle), oak, light vanilla in the background, green apple, lemon, caramel,
With water: strong nose of green apples, heather and vanilin, floral,fresh and pleasant. The spirit scent disappeared.

Palate: Much alcohol that disappears quickly, sweet, honey, lightspice, a little rough and bitter directly but not in an unpleasant way.
With water: Almonds, honey, vanilla, the strong alcohol tastedisappeared

Finish: Spice, resin, oily, floral and then go over the subtle flavors of vanilla, citrus and wild apple tree.
With water: same as without water, except for few notes of almonds.

Comment: Ok. Was a bit negative at first but it grows. Important that it must breathe a little and calm down a minimum of fifteen minutes ifthe bottle is newly opened. Good both with and without water, butwater brings out a different character. Mix about 2 teaspoons to 3 cl.

Bruichladdich Peat

Bruichladdich Distillery grundades 1881 som ett resultat av den ökade efterfrågan på whisky från blended industrin. Bruichladdich betyder strandsluttningen. Bruichladdich ligger strax norr om Port Charlotte på halvön Rhinns. Tvärsöver den djupa viken Loch Indaal ligger destilleriet och samhället Bowmore.
 I december 2000 gick tre kollegor på Murray McDavid in med £7,5 miljoner och köpte destilleriet samt dess 7000 fat. Jim McEwan anställdes som manager och blev även delägare i företaget. Den 29:e maj 2001 slog Bruichladdich åter upp portarna efter en omfattande renovering. Officiella buteljeringar från Bruichladdich avlöser nu varandra och de satsar mycket på marknadsföringen av ”nya” Bruichladdich som man kort och gott kallar 'Laddie'. Bruichladdich Distillery har även börjat tillverka två rökigare whiskysorter som kommer ut på marknaden om cirka 5-10 år, Port Charlotte och Octomore. Dessa fanns för många år sedan som egna destillerier men är numera nedlagda sedan decennier tillbaka. Den whisky man nu återskapar på Bruichladdich skall förhoppningsvis visa hur dessa smakade.

De har blivit Distillery of the Year två gånger och Innovator of the year en gång sedan omstarten.

Sedan övertagandet 2001 har man lyft fram den äldre hantverkstraditionen och således försöker de göra det mesta på plats i destilleriet. Kornet som används för Bruichladdich tas från Port Ellen Maltings och är rökt till cirka 3 ppm. Kornet till de två nya sorterna Octomore och Port Charlotte tas från Inverness och röks till 80 ppm respektive 40 ppm. De har renoverat en gammal maltkvarn (från 1881!) som de använder sig av. Mäskkaret är öppet och tar sex ton. Jäskaren är sex till antalet och alla är tillverkade i oregonfuru. Destilleriet har fyra pannor av lökmodell med långa raka halsar. De väljer att inte kylfiltrera whiskyn eller använda någon form av färgsättning. För lagringen använder de ett flertal olika sherry och bourbon fat, som använts en eller två gånger (first och second-fills). Faten lagras i deras tio lagerhus på området, samt två i närliggande byn Port Charlotte. Bruichladdich har nu också en egen buteljeringshall, vilket bara finns på två andra fastlandsdestillerier. Flaskorna buteljeras automatiskt för att senare manuellt etiketteras och paketeras.

Bruichladdich Peat är mer rökig än standardvarianten av Bruichladdich och anges innehålla en fenolhalt på omkring 35 ppm.

Doft: Sötaktig torvrök med inslag av citrus och hav, läder
Med vatten: En något jordigare doft, lite mer spritig, söt, lätt torv/humus. En mer lättare doft.

Smak: Söt, aningen kryddig, citrus, rök
Med vatten: Spritig, kryddig, jordigare i smaken liksom i doften


Eftersmak: Rökig, söt mandarin, apelsinskal och en lätt bitterhet
Med vatten: Mer eftersmak som framförallt är mer kryddig men även mer rökig och framförallt längre

Kommentar: Helt OK men inget som lyfter ordentligt, ganska lätt och behaglig men var försiktig med vattnen, Troligen ganska ung. Efter omprovning då whiskyn fått reagera lite med syret i flaskan har denna whisky växt och blivit riktigt fin. Fortfarande försiktigt med vattnet.

Bruichladdich Distillery was founded in 1881 as a result of the increased demand from the blended whisky industry. Bruichladdich means beach slope. Bruichladdich is located just north of Port Charlotte on the peninsula Rhinns. Across the deep bay Loch Indaal is the distillery and the Town of Bowmore.

In December 2000, three colleagues at Murray McDavid in with £ 7.5 million and purchased the distillery and its 7000 barrel. Jim McEwan was hired as the manager and was also part owner of the company. On 29th May 2001, the Bruichladdich re-opened its doors after an extensive renovation. Official bottlings from Bruichladdich succeed each other now and they invest heavily in the marketing of "new" Bruichladdich that they simply call 'Laddie'. Mash tub is open and they takes six tons. Washbacks are six in number and they all are made of oregon pine. The distillery has four stills of the onion model with long straight necks. They choose not chill filter the whisky or use any type of coloring. For storage, they use a variety of sherry and bourbon barrels, used once or twice (first and second-fill). The drums are stored in their ten warehouses in the area, and two in the nearby village of Port Charlotte. Bruichladdich has now also has its own bottling hall, which is only available on two other mainland distilleries. The bottles are bottled automatically to later manually labeled and packaged.

Bruichladdich Peat is more smoky than the standard version of Bruichladdich and declared to contain a phenol content of about 35 ppm.

 

Review:

Nose: Sweetish peat smoke with hints of citrus and sea, leather
With water: A slightly earthy aroma, a little more spirituous, sweet, light peat / humus. One more lighter nose.

Palate: Sweet, slightly spicy, citrus, smoke
With water: Alcohol, spicy, earthy taste as well as the smell

Finish: Smoky, sweet mandarin, orange peel and a slight bitterness
With water: more taste, above all, more spicy, but even more smoky and especially longer

Comment: Quite OK, but nothing that lifts properly, fairly light and comfortable but be careful with the water, probably quite young. After retesting when the whisky had little reaction with oxygen in the bottle, this Whisky grown and become really good. Still gently with water.

Glengrant 10 YO

Glen Grant Distillery grundades 1840 av bröderna John och James Grant i staden Rothes. Under 40 år var destilleriet det enda i staden, men nu finns det fem stycken. Några år efter starten uppgick årsproduktionen till hela 180 000 liter vilket var mycket i mitten på 1800-talet. 1872 övertogs destilleriet av James Grant, en äventyrare och storviltsjägare som bland annat byggde en stor trädgård invid destilleriet som än idag attraherar många besökare. 1898 byggde James ett nytt destilleri på andra sidan vägen vilket döptes till Glen Grant nr 2. Lagen säger dock att det inte kan finnas flera destillerier med samma namn. Vilket gjorde att det fick namnet Caperdonich. J & J Grant Limited slog sig samman med Glenlivet 1932 och bildade The Glenlivet and Glen Grant Distillers Limited. Mellan 1970 och 1977 ingick destilleriet i företaget The Glenlivet Distillers. 1977 köptes företaget av Chivas Brothers som ägs av Pernod Ricard. Destilleriet har en stor marknad i Italien där de är den bäst säljande single malten, den femåriga utgåvan säljer mycket bra.

Vattnet tar destilleriet från vattenkällan Tobardomhnaich, vilket betyder sabbatskällan. Kornet köps lättrökt från centrala mälterier sedan de stängt sitt eget mälteri. Mäsktunnan är på 12 ton och gjord i rostfritt stål. De 10 jäskaren är gjorda i oregon trä och är nu 45 år gamla. Åtta spritpannor som är ånguppvärmda ersatte i mitten på 80-talet de koleldade pannorna. Mäskpannorna rymmer 15 000 liter och är av boiling ballmodell. Spritpannorna är något mindre på 9 600 liter och har ett intrikat refluxsystem som enligt Glen Grant förädlar destilleringen ytterliggare. Whiskyn lagras i begagnade sherry och bourbonfat på plats i traditionella lagerhus. Buteljeringen sker i Newbridge utanför Edinburgh. 5,2 miljoner liter produceras årligen.

Jag har själv inte varit någon fan av Glen Grant men köpte en flaska nu under min senaste semester så jag beslöt att göra en omtestning av denna exakt två år efter att jag recenserade den tidigare. Lägger därför upp båda recensionerna här under. Första gjord 2010-01-06 och de3n andra gjord 2012-01-06.

Doft: Malt, blommig, honung, vanilj

Omtestning:
Vanilj, honung, malt, lätt citrus
Med vatten: Mer nöt eller mandeldoft, doft av ek och pomerans, mycket lätt torvrök, vaxkaka, mindre av vanilj men den finns där i bakgrunden.

Smak: malt, blommig, lätt citrus, vanilj, gräddkola,

Omtestning:
Vanilj, citrus, gräddkola, örter i bakgrunden, ganska delikat smak och känsla i munnen.
Med vatten: Citrus, vanilj, torrare än innan, färska gröna örter kommer också fram.

Eftersmak: kryddig, lime, oljig efterton av rostat ekfat,

Omtestning:
Lite krydda framförallt på tungspetsen och sedan på sidorna. Lite Vanilj, lätt lakrits, lätt citrus, mjuk och följsam. Lite rök efter en stund.
Med vatten: mer kryddig i hela munnen, mer vanilj och salmiak,

Kommentar: rund och behaglig i sin karaktär. Ej vansinnigt lång eftersmak men tillräcklig för en vardagswhisky. Var som alltid försiktig med vattnet i en whisky med så låg %. Öppnar upp sig med lite vatten och blir rundare i smak.

Omtestning:
Balanserad och fin, längre eftersmak i denna upplaga än vad det var för några år sedan. Mindre färgad, har förbättrat sig under de senaste åren.en liten annan karaktär med vatten tillsatt. Kan rekommendera denna.

Glen Grant Distillery was founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant in the town of Rothes. During the 40 years was the only distillery in the town, but now there are five. I myself have not been a fan of Glen Grant, but bought a bottle now, during my last vacation so I decided to do a retest of the this exactly two years after I reviewed it earlier. I therefore puts up both of the reviews below. The first made ​​2010-01-06, and the other made ​​2012-01-06.

Nose: Malt, floral, honey, vanilla

Comment: round and pleasant in his character. Not insanely long finish, but enough for an everyday Whisky. As always, be careful with the water in a Whisky with such a low %. Opens up with a little water and becomes more rounded in flavor.

retesting:
Balanced and fine, long aftertaste in this edition than it was a few years ago. Less colored, has improved during recent years. A little different character with water added. Will recommend it.

Glenmorangie 10 yo

Glenmorangie fick sin licens 1843. Destilleriet ligger några mil norr om Inverness. Namnet betyder "Den fridfulla dalgången". Man kan faktiskt spåra aktivitet på området ytterligare 250 år tillbaka i tiden, då i form av ett gårdsdestilleri.

 Destilleriet lades i malpåse mellan 1931 - 1936 som en följd av förbudstiden i USA och börskrashen 1929. 1970 expanderades destilleriet i syfte att dubbla dess kapacitet. Efterfrågan på Glenmorangie var stor de närmaste åren och 1990 kunde de dubbla produktionen ytterliggare till åtta pannor. 1996 bytte ägarna strategi och även namn till Glenmorangie PLC. Detta år lanserades också "wood finishes" i sherry port och madeira fat.

 Destilleriet har 16 anställda "Sixteen men of Tain" som dagligen producerar 48 tunnor. Nästan all whisky buteljeras som single malt och de är angelägen om att inte släppa iväg några fat till oberoende buteljerare. Under 2005 startades Kindred Spirits där man kan bli medlem och få olika förmåner. 

 Vattnet som är mycket hårt och mineralrikt tas från den privata källan Tarlogie Springs. Det sägs att vattnet som används föll som regne för över hundra år sedan! Den egna mältningsavdelningen stängdes 1980 och nu köper men in den lättrökta kornet (1-1.4 ppm) från centrala mälterier. Mäsktunnan och de åtta jäskaren är av rostfritt stål. De åtta spritpannorna är av boiling ballmodell och förhållandevis små, cirka 10 000 liter, de är dock högst i skottland på hela 5,14 meter! Halsarna på pannorna har mer formen av rör än halsar. Uteslutande fat från Missouri USA på 250 liter som lagrats fyra år med Kentucky Bourbon används till standard utgåvorna. Sedan 1996 har de dock experimenterat en hel del och olika "avslutningar" bland annat. Madeira och Portvins fat används. Lagring sker i 14 lagerhus på området vid ett vattenbryn. Buteljering görs i Glenmorangie PLC's stora anläggning nära Edinburgh. Produktionskapaciteten är 3,5 miljoner liter per år. Glenmorangie säljer näst bäst bland single malt i Skottland.

 Recension

 Doft: Mycket smörkola som dominerar totalt till att börja med. Sedan framträder en blommig doft med inslag av nyslaget hö. Inslag av vanilj och jordgubbe.

Smak:  Mjuk och len med en lätt smak av smörkola och kryddor med vaniljinslag. Rätt så kraftigt inslag av ekfat som blandar sig med de övriga smakerna.

Eftersmak: Kryddig och aningen rostad torr eftersmak. Avtar ganska fort och avslutas med en smak av torr ek.

Kommentar:  Behöver inget vatten men om du tillsätter vatten var försiktig. Denna whisky drunknar lätt.

Glenmorangie got its license in 1843. The distillery is situated a few mil north of Inverness. The name means "The peaceful valley." You can actually track the activity in the area another 250 years back in time, then as a farm distillery.

Necks of the boilers has more the form of tubes than necks. Exclusively barrels from Missouri U.S. at 250 liters stored four years with Kentucky Bourbon used to the standard editions. Since 1996, however, they experimented a lot and different "endings" among others. Madeira and Port Wine barrels are used. Is stored in 14 warehouses in the area at a water's edge. Bottling is done in Glenmorangie PLC's huge facility near Edinburgh. The production capacity is 3.5 million gallons per year. Glenmorangie sells second best among single malt in Scotland.

Review:

Nose: A lot butterscotch which dominates to begin with. Then appears a floral scent with hints of freshly mown hay. Hints of vanilla and strawberry.

Palate: Soft and smooth with a slight taste of caramel and spice with vanilla touches. Rather strongly hints of oak, which mixes with the other flavors.

Finish: Spicy and slightly roasted dry finish. Wears off pretty fast and ends with a taste of dry oak.

Comment: Need no water but if you add water, be careful. This Whisky drowns easily.

The Ileach

Idag tar vi en kortrecension. The Ileach betyder "mannen från Islay", och det ingen tvekan om vilken ö den här whiskyn kommer ifrån. The Ileach är inget destilleri trots att det är en single malt utan det är ett av destillerierna på ön som tillverkar denna whisky. Den buteljeras av Highlands & Islands Scotch Whisky.


Eftersom det inte är kännt vilket detilleri som tillverkar denna whisky går spekulationerna höga och både den svenska leverantören och buteljeraren tiger som graven och hänvisar till ett avtal med det aktuella destilleriet om sekretess i frågan. Flest ledtrådar verkar peka mot att det är ung Lagavulin i flaskan (vilket jag personligen ställer mej tveksam till), medan kemiska analyser som har gjorts pekar på att det är en Bowmore.

Nu tar vi recensionen:

Doft: Rök, torv, hav, trä

Smak: Frisk, sälta, ekfat, torr, frukt, sherry 

Eftersmak: torr, rökighet som sprider sig i munnen men denna blir betydligt kortare med vatten. Mycket fat smak efter att rökigheten försvinner (detta händer bara med vatten i). 

Kommentar: OK whisky som är bäst utan vatten eller mycket lite vatten.

Today we take a short review. The Ileach means "man from Islay", and there is no doubt about which island this whisky comes from. The Ileach is no dessilleri although there is a single malt, but it is one of the distilleries on the island that makes this Whisky. It is bottled by the Highlands & Islands Scotch Whisky.

Since it is not known which distillery that makes this Whisky is speculation high and both the Swedish supplier and bottler _are silent as the grave, and refers to a contract with the current distillery on secrecy in the matter. Most clues seem to point to that it is a young Lagavulin in the bottle (which personally makes me doubtful), while chemical analysis has been done indicates that it is a Bowmore.

Now we review:
Nose: Smoke, peat, sea, wood

Palate: Fresh, salt, oak, dry fruits, sherry

Finish: dry, smokiness that spreads in the mouth but this is much shorter with water. Very barrel taste after smoky unit disappears (this happens only with water).

Comment: OK, Whisky is best without water or very little water.

Score: 85

Chivas Regal 12 YO

I min generation i Sverige anses Chivas Regal oftast som en gubbwhisky. Detta beror nog på att våra föräldrar oftast köppte denna om de skulle ha en riktigt fin whisky att bjuda på. Detta har (måste jag motvilligt erkänna) gjort att jag har haft lite agg mot denna och inte testat den sedan min före detta svärfar bjöd mej på den för ca 10 år sedan.Detta skall härmed ändras å det bestämdaste.

En stor del av maltwhiskyn i Chivas Regal kommer från Benriach och Longmorn, men även Straithisla, Glenlivet och Glen Grant ingår.  ”Schivas” är ett urgammalt skotsk familjenamn från en liten by, Schivas, vid floden Ythan i nordöstra Skottland. Ordet kommer från gaeliska ”seimhas”(uttalas”sheevas”).

Nu dags för en recension av denna gubbwhisky:

Doft: Fruktig doft med körsbär, pomerans och knäck
Med vatten: Mer rök framträder samt en doft av ekfat. Över det hela en djupare och äldre doft med vatten. Troligen finns det äldre malt i denna.

Smak: Lätt kryddig, söt, torkad frukt, lätt rök, citrus och vanilj.
Med vatten: Mer citrus och vanilj. Mindre krydda förutom längst fram på tungspetsen.

Eftersmak: Mer krydda och rök i eftersmaken än från början, fruktigheten kommer fram här också.
Med vatten: mer krydda i hela munnen men mer balanserad. Vaniljsmaken sprider sig mer i munnen och blir mer framträdande men mer balanserad. Röken mer nedtonad men ökar för en stund för att sedan försvinna framåt och dö ut efter någon minut. Endast en citrus oljig smak döljer sig kvar efter det.

Kommentar: Balanserad och fin blend. Troligtvis en del gammal whisky i denna flaska. Tårarna på sidan av glaset är ganska tjocka också vilket skulle kunna indikera det. Detta är absolut en bra vardagswhisky för den som inte gillar det extrema utan en välbalanserad whisky som går hem hos de flesta.

In my generation in Sweden is considered Chivas Regal mostly as an old man's Whisky. That's probably because our parents usually bought this if they would have a really fine Whisky to offer. This is (I must unwillingly admit) allowed me to have had some grudge against this and not tested it since my ex father in law invited me on it for about 10 years ago. This is hereby amended in the strongest terms.

A large proportion of malt the maltwhisky of Chivas Regal comes from Benriach and Longmorn, but also Straithisla, Glenlivet and Glen Grant is included. "Schivas" is an ancient Scottish family name from a small village, Schivas, by the river Ythan in north east Scotland. The word comes from the Gaelic "seimhas" (pronounced "sheevas").


Now time for a review of this old man's Whisky:

Nose: Fruity nose with cherry, orange and toffee
With water: more smoke emerges, and a touch of oak. Over it all a deeper and more mature nose with water. Probably there are older malt in this one.

Taste: Slightly spicy, sweet, dried fruit, light smoke, citrus and vanilla.
With water: more citrus and vanilla. Less spice except at the tip of the tongue.

Finish: More spice and smoke in the finish than the beginning, fruitiness comes up here too.
With water: more spice in the whole mouth, but more balanced. Vanilla taste spreads more in the mouth and becomes more prominent, but more balanced. The smoke is more toned down but increases for a while and then disappear forward and die out after a minute. Only a citrus oily taste hides remain after that.

Comment: Balanced and fine blend. Probably some old Whisky in this bottle. The tears on the side of the glass is pretty thick too, which could indicate that. This is definitely a good everyday Whisky for those who do not like extreme but balanced Whisky that goes home with the most people.
