Yet another new Swedish Whisky "Box Single Malt Whisky The Pioneer" 48.1% ABV

Box Destilleri  Bild: Box Whisky

Fortfarande söt men lite sträv.

Now it was finally time to test the first official whisky from Whisky box outside Kramfors in northern Sweden.

Box Distillery is located just north of the center of Sweden in the ådalen at the great Ångermanälven where meltwater from the Swedish mountains runs past in its journey towards the Baltic sea.

The northern location results in large differences in temperature between day and night and winter and summer. Water and nature is clean and relatively unaffected by human activity.

The malt used is old-style pilsner malt to give a bigger taste but it is not as high efficiency as regular Whisky malt.

Ådalen was previously best known for its dark but important to Sweden's history as an early area for the industry next Ångermanälven. The darkest episode was during a major strike in 1931 when the climax was reached when protesting workers were shot at by the military and five workers were killed and five wounded. This became a turning point in Swedish politics and how the military should be used. We now look forward to a new industrial era with far more positive elements and ådalen has a bright future ahead and become known for well-made and good whisky.

The Pioneer is bottled in June 2014, is three years old and has an alcohol content of 48.1%. It contains no added colorings and is non chill-filtered. 50 percent unsmoked Whisky stored three years in bourbon-anchor (40 liters) of 35 percent smoky whisky (31ppm) stored three years in bourbon-anchor (40 liters) of 15 percent unsmoked Whisky stored two years in 200-liter bourbon and end stored in 100-liter barrels of new Swedish charred oak. More info about the bottling at: http://bottlings.boxwhisky.se/
(Source Box Whisky)

Now to the review:

Colour: Amber -1

Nose: Straw and some herbs. Middle Light smoke and almost a little hint of strawberries. A little oak scent and light aroma of sweet dessert wine.
With water: More spicy with hints of cinnamon and raisins which disappears after a few minutes and then returned but with a greater sweetness and more oak.

Taste: Sweet with a lot of flavor of sweet dessert wine. Very light smoke, oak and raisins.
With water: More spice and oak. Still sweet but a little rough. Some small hints of honey and vanilla.

Finish: Spicy, a little rough with the taste of sherry. Medium long finish.
With water: Spicy on the front top of the tongue. More tannin flavor and almost a bit oily. The finish lasts a little longer.

Comments: Is a bit disappointed after the talk that has been on this but is quite ok. Comes not quite up to my expectations but it whets the appetite for future bottlings with a little more time in the barrels.

Nytt svenskt destilleri! Test av Smögen Primör. New Swedish distillery!

Gamla lagret. Old warehouse

Spritpannan, The Spirit Still

Betyg: 88

Well now it was finally time to test the finished whisky from Smögen Whisky. I have previously tested a new make of about 1.5 years at the distillery visit. This whetted the appetite and now is the first three-year-here.

Smögen Whisky lies on the Swedish west coast in Sotenäs municipality on the outskirts of the small community of Hunnebostrand just over 10 kilometers from the island Smögen (which the distillery gets its name from) located at the tip of sotenäset. It was started by Whisky enthusiast Pär Caldenby which also manages the entire process in the distillery.

Salty westerly winds and fairly mild and wet winters is very similar to the conditions on the Scottish west coast.

Smögen Whisky makes a pretty smoky malt with a phenol content of about 45 ppm. It is Sweden's smallest legal distillery that I know of and the entire process is done manually in small boilers.

Smögen Primör has an alcohol content of 63.7% and stored for 3 years in 9 barrels of European pedunculate oak which 8 are new 110 liter barrel and is one ex Bordeaux wine barrels of 225 liters. The barrel numbers are: 5 and 14-21 and is distilled from September to November 2010 and is bottled Nov. 15, 2013.

Now, let´s do the test:

Appearance: Amber + -0

Nose: Young and fruity aroma with hints of smoke and a nutty aroma. A little heather bloom, you can feel as well.
With Water: Water drops part of the aroma and get a floral aroma and a little rosewood scent but will after a while with more smokier tones. More scent of fresh oak.

Taste: Strong youthful smokiness with a strong flavor of toasted oak barrels. A little caramel and licorice. Violets can also arrive. Slightly peppery along the sides of the tongue.
With Water: Now, it appears far more sweet notes and almost a little desert wine flavor. Fresh oak, a bit rough, and more smoke but a lighter smokiness and not as heavy when watered.

Finish: Strong licorice, violets and a little oily feeling. Quite peppery on the tip of the tongue and a sweet smokiness comes afterwards that stays for quite some time.
With Water: A lot more smoke and a bit more peppery otherwise quite similar. a wonderfully long smokiness with water.

Comments: Very good for being so young. Good work Pär Caldenby. Looking forward to testing it when it has been on barrels a little longer.

Hammer Head czech single malt whisky!

Honungen hänger kvar men eken tonas ned.

Now there have happened something I never thought I would experience and it is to taste a Czech malt whisky. This is called Hammerhead and has been named after the old mill that used to create the whisky. That was the ruling elite in the then Czechoslovakia closed as resolved that this Whisky would be produced. After the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall collapsed the whisky was forgotten to be rediscovered 20 years later, in the back of the distillery's cellar when the Stock Spirits company bought the distillery.

The whisky was made at prádlo distillery near Plzeň in western Czech Republic, which most is known for its beer. The distillery was founded in 1928 and has made many different kinds of pot-still spirits of high quality. The water is taken from the Bohemia region and the malt is 100% Czech domestic as well as the oak barrels that the whisky was stored on is made of.
 Now to the review:
Nose: fresh oak and vanilla. Some light caramel and a lot of honey. A little cereal straw scent that converge with the honey.
With water: a deeper tone of dried fruit. The honey lingers but the oak toned down. A little scent of sprouts or green malt.

Palate: vanilla, caramel, honey, a little rough from the oak. Fruity and pleasant sweetness. Almost a little blend sweetness
With water: caramel, some vanilla, spicy as in chili, less sweet but still pretty sweet honey lesser and more like maple syrup.

Finish: Spicy finish that increases in about 30 seconds, then switch to an oily, almost waxy feeling in the mouth which then ends in a slightly oak sawdust feel.
With water: Sweet not as spicy at first but gets a little chili character in the middle that slowly fades away. A sense of syrup sweetness remain one / a few minutes then it will be just a rather woody taste left as if you worked at a sawmill that sawed oak planks.

Comment: Will probably give this an OK, but I think it has been a little too long in the cask, which has been given the oak
too much space. Without it the whisky probably wold lift 2-3 points. Important is that it has aired a long time if the bottle is almost full. At least half an hour in the glass, otherwise, it wold have more the character of a bourbon in particular in the nose as I experienced the first time I tested it.

Kommentar: Ok men skippa vattnet.

Time for a new review of Whisky. This time it will be a series of three where I will test a very young "Welsh Whisky" in the three expressions as they now launching initially on the world market. Begins here with the Madeira cask and I will proceed with sherry cask and peated.

In the late 1800s shut the last distillery in North Wales and it would take 100 years before Wales experienced newly produced Whisky again. In 1998, four individuals founded the Welsh Whisky Company and purchased the equipment from a closed distillery.

The location of the distillery was in the village of Penderyn in the outskirts of Breton Beacons National Park. The availability of water of very high quality is said to have been one of the main reasons to locate a distillery there.
A copper still was created as a separate concept to distinguish itself from Ireland and Scotland. Dr. David Faraday specially designed the still so that the distillation process only takes place in one still, unlike Scotland and Ireland, two three. The first steps in Whisky production of malting and mashing is not at the distillery, but it is purchased from a brewery in Cardiff, Brains Brewery.

The process water that is of high quality are locally and has run through the red sandstone and limestone caves.

Brains Brewery in Cardiff provides the distillery with the mash according to clear specifications. Most are unpeated but a small part are peatsmoked easily for some special editions. The advantage to take the mash from the brewery is that it is of good quality and that they can focus on the distilling process.

Penderyn has only one boiler in which distillation circulates a few times. The liquor is fed up and further in "Lyne arm" and into a complex system of 24 "plates" where liquor particles condense and re-distilled two to three times. This can also vary the distillery when and how much is distilled. The complex distillation process gives in Penderyn Distillery a lot of clean and elegant Whisky with a high strength the distillate have a streth of over 80%. The distillation takes about eight hours. The capacity is 2500 liters.

The whisky is stored in bourbon casks from Jack Daniels and Evan Williams. A small part is stored in sherry madeira and Hungarian wine barrel. Standard Edition from the distillery will continue to be finnished in the madeiracasks.
The special shape and design of the boiler provides a whisky that is maturing rapidly. The distillery says that the subjects that have to mature a long time in the Scotch is not in Penderyn at all.

The whisky is not chill filtered when it is considered as "pure" that it is not necessary. Bottling is done at the distillery.
Now to the review:

Nose: Raisins apricots Mandarin peach, light scent of sea and fried flounder? and grass
With water: freshly mown grass, cask, mandarin, light toffee.
Palate: Fruity, apricot peach, light taste of fresh oak, fruit wine saltiness
With water: a little stale taste but most of the flavors are left apart from fresh oak
Finish: A little spicy, salty, light smoke, apricot and peach stick around long with the light smoke.
With water: more spicy, more salt, more smoke and less of everything else.
Comment: Decent. A bit like a fruit wine, but skip the water.

Mackmyra Brukswhisky MB-001

Betyg: 86

Pris: 398 kr på systembolaget.

Time to test the next Swedish Whisky from Mackmyra:

Nose: Citrus, vanilla, light smoke, juniper, youthful.

With water: distinctive aroma of toasted oak with a caramel aroma, Citrus toned down somewhat to the same extent replaced by the more vanilla.

Palate: Spicy, oak, vanilla, juniper, butter toffee, quite easily,

With water: most sweet, a little liqueur feel with the old flavor characters, however, disappeared almost entirely of spicy

Finish: Spicy unit lingers along with a roasted character of roasted candied almonds, not excessivelong finish;

With water: less to taste a little spicy after the water had been in for a bit longer, vanilla notes linger longer than before.

Comment: Yes this was very light and not very complex, it is the first Mackmyra I tasted and I have not made up my mind whether to have water or not. You get a more diverse Whisky if water is not added but I think that during a summer day is not enoughwater wrong. Notice that while I write this whisky developed with water and spicy unit will return something. an ok Whisky with anexciting freshness that I never tasted any other brand.

PS. After having tasted the "first edition" is this Mackmyra a sharper blade.

Armorik Whisky Breton

Doft: Mycket vanilj, ekfat, ljunghonung, Lite medicinalt initialt, Svagt rökig maltighet i bakgrunden.
Med vatten: honung vanilj, lätt rök,

Smak: Söt, fruktig, lite stickande, fyllig smak, Vanilj, Malt, ek,

Time to test a French Whisky.
Armorik Whisky is produced in the Celtic part of France, Brittany.

Nose: A lot Vanilla, oak, heather honey, A little medical initially, Low smoky malt in the background.
With water: honey, vanilla, light smoke,

Palate: Sweet, fruity, slightly pungent, full-bodied, Vanilla, Malt, oak,
With water: more spicy, honey, vanilla, sea, very sweet malt flavor.

Finish: Short with a little smokiness at the back with a little bitterness, just like after a well-hopt
 beer.
With water: spicy, sweet and very lightly salted with a hint of light smoke.

Comment: Fairly light "French"! Whisky from Brittany (the last Celtic part of France) which is good but do not stand out. A lotburbon in this. is beneficial to air a moment before the tip. Do not add plenty of water. Would guess that it is between 5-6 yearsold.

Mackmyra Första utgåvan/ - The First Edition / Swedish Whisky

Perhaps it´s time to review a Swedish Whisky available on all Systembolag in Sweden. Mackmyra distillery lies outside Gävle in central Sweden on Mackmyra mill and was the first Swedish Whisky produced since the 1960s.

Now for the notes.

Nose: Direct a strong juniper smoke mixed with a fruity aroma of malt and vanilla, juniper scent then goes over the scent of juniper bark.
With water: A slightly deeper smokiness and more pronounced vanilla aroma, much oak aroma.

Palate: A spicy taste with hints of juniper berries and dried fruit;
With water: more vanilla pear in flavor and a more direct spiciness that is not as strong and dies away after a few seconds.

Finish: a spiciness that spreads in the mouth and that is followed up by a fresh juniper smoke and then die away in the sweet malt notes. Fairly short finish anyway.
With water: Fairly bleach aftertaste, vanilla, light spice, astringency from the oak barrels. Still, shortly after taste a little more spice.

Comments: A fairly universal Whisky that does not raise any heights in my tastes but I like juniper aroma and taste.
