Glenmorangie got its license in 1843. The distillery is situated a few mil north of Inverness. The name means "The peaceful valley." You can actually track the activity in the area another 250 years back in time, then as a farm distillery.
The distillery was mothballed between 1931 - 1936 as a result of Prohibition in the U.S. stock market crash and in 1929. 1970 the distillery was expanded to double its capacity. The demand for Glenmorangie was big in the coming years and in 1990 they were able to double production further to eight boilers. 1996 changed its strategy and even the owners name to Glenmorangie PLC. This year also launched "wood finishes" in sherry port and madeira casks.

The distillery has 16 employees' Sixteen Men of Tain "which daily produces 48 barrels. Almost all Whisky are bottled as single malts and they are anxious not to drop off a few barrels to independent bottlers. In 2005 started Kindred Spirits, where you can become a member and get different benefits.
The water is very hard and rich in minerals taken from the private source Tarlogie Springs. It is said that the water used fell as rain over a hundred years ago! It's malting plant was closed in 1980 and now buys the light smoked barley (1-1.4 ppm) from central malting houses. Mash barrel and the eight vats are made of stainless steel. The eight liquor boilers are of boiling ball model and relatively small, about 10 000 liters, they are on the other hand the highest in Scotland at the 5.14 meters! Necks of the boilers has more the form of tubes than necks. Exclusively barrels from Missouri U.S. at 250 liters stored four years with Kentucky Bourbon used to the standard editions. Since 1996, however, they experimented a lot and different "endings" among others. Madeira and Port Wine barrels are used. Is stored in 14 warehouses in the area at a water's edge. Bottling is done in Glenmorangie PLC's huge facility near Edinburgh. The production capacity is 3.5 million gallons per year. Glenmorangie sells second best among single malt in Scotland.

Review:
Nose: A lot butterscotch which dominates to begin with. Then appears a floral scent with hints of freshly mown hay. Hints of vanilla and strawberry.
Palate: Soft and smooth with a slight taste of caramel and spice with vanilla touches. Rather strongly hints of oak, which mixes with the other flavors.
Finish: Spicy and slightly roasted dry finish. Wears off pretty fast and ends with a taste of dry oak.
Comment: Need no water but if you add water, be careful. This Whisky drowns easily.
Score: 84
